A Space Of My Own
I am now renting space at my favorite antique mall in the area – Through the Garden Gate Antiques. I love being able to have my own little space to decorate – even if it’s only 12×12.5ft. I control the inventory and I can display that inventory however I want to, which is the best part of the job! After all, it’s all about the presentation!
I almost feel like this space is a practice run for when I have my own shop… one day! A girl can dream! Until then please check out Rusticity Decor at this amazing antique mall in Mechanicsville, Va. It’s such a wonderful place full of great finds and great people!
My First Vintage Show
I had such an awesome experience at my first vintage show – A Vintage Frame Of Mind Popup Show in Currituck, NC.
Unfortunately, Black Friday wasn’t a great day to have it since everyone appeared to be at the malls instead… so i’m thinking of it as a practice run.
So even though I didn’t get to sell a lot, i’m still so happy that I went and was a part of such a wonderful little show. My entire family came together and made things to sell in my booth as well – it was really heartwarming. Millie brought her jewelry and Molly brought her photography prints from her company, Art Through A Lens. My dad made several wooden caddy’s and my mom made rustic bark vases and wire jewelry holders. So I had a 10×10 booth FILLED with incredible hand made and vintage items! I WAS SO PROUD of how it all turned out.
I would also like to thank my incredible sister Millie Hiner and her boyfriend Seth Powers for joining me in this adventure. They were such a huge help and I couldn’t have done it without them!
I also met some incredible vendors and the experience was priceless. I am so ready and prepared for the next show!

Vintage at the Vineyard
Rusticity Decor’s first show will be at Sanctuary Vineyards on black Friday! It’s the Vintage Frame of Mind Pop-Up Show! I am extremely excited! Come see us and do some great shopping!
My new obsession
It’s safe to say that my new obsession is vintage store display racks. Every time I see one for sale I have to scoop it up! I like the metal ones with chippy paint the best and I like to imagine their past… their story (because everything is better with a story). Perhaps they came out of an old general/country store that had to close its doors.
I buy them – not really knowing how I intend to use them or what exactly they will display. Maybe one day they will show off vintage or homemade jewelry and stationery in my own decor store. A girl can dream!
For a good cause
Rusticity Décor was proud and honored to design a mask to go on auction for the Children’s Hospital Ball! Of course, I had to make my mask light up! The mask is feathered in fiber optic lights and adorned with vintage Mozart sheet music, jewels and wire springs. I used burlap for the base, my material of choice, and intensified the eyes with black lace.
I named the mask, Rustic Glam. It’s a bit avant-garde and was created for a glamorous lady who likes to stand out in a crowd. I hope it raises some money for such a great cause!
My first trip to Brimfield
I went to my first Brimfield antique show last week, and WOW what an experience! It was ginormous! It was extremely difficult for me to not want to look at everything all at once – event though that was impossible. Tent’s were set up in huge fields alongside a mile-long stretch of Rte. 20.
We were treasure hunting for 7 fun-filled hours and we still only saw about half of it. The show had a lot of everything – from rescued factory shelving and tables to handmade jewelry. We saw tents full of galvanized buckets and rusty shop signs to repurposed lighting and primitive furniture. It really was overwhelming – it a good way.
We probably walked 30 miles that day weaving in and out of the fields and trucking purchases back and forth to the car. Then we proceeded to drive the 8.5 hours home to Virginia. Next year I plan on making this a two-day event!
Treasure Hunting
My passion for treasure hunting started during my childhood.
On rainy days my parents and all 5 of us kids would hop into the van and go antiquing. And on family trips my dad would take the scenic route instead of the interstate so we could stop at all of the little antique places along the way. We were never looking for anything in particular – it was always just the thrill of the hunt. And that thrill never left me.
My passion was accelerated when I got my own house and yard to decorate. I was starting from scratch and was forced to be creative since I didn’t have a ton of money to work with. But, that’s the fun part for me– making something out of nothing! I started collecting what I loved and the decorating part came very naturally.
Of course, as with most collectors, I eventually ran out of room for new purchases and projects. When that happened, I figured I either needed another house or I could keep treasure hunting and upcycling, but I could share it with others. And Rusticity Décor was born.
I started working part time at my full-time job so that I could have more time to treasure hunt, upcycle and create. And it was the best decision I have ever made. I couldn’t be happier and I feel like I am living my dream, which truly was born out of a passion that I’ve had since childhood. And the best part is that this is only the beginning and I can’t wait to see where Rusticity Décor takes me. Until then, I’ll keep taking the scenic route.
It’s in My Blood!
I am an artist, an upcycler, a relentless scavenger and a DIY kinda girl.
I get these traits honestly – it’s in my blood. Both of my parents are hard-working, extremely creative, make-it-happen kind of people. My dad owns his own contracting company and when he isn’t designing and building new homes, he’s crafting benches out of tree trunks, inventing contraptions to solve problems – oh and writing poetry while he’s doing all of this. Likewise, when my mom isn’t shelling out advice to one of us kids (there are five of us) and tending the family farm, she’s scavenging around my dad’s barn and repurposing something to decorate the house or garden.
They are both jacks-of-all-trades and taught me the value of being self sufficient, making something out of nothing, and following your passions.
